This pass, located 759 metres above sea level, has long been known as Ashigara Road, and was a commonly used route connecting the eastern and western regions. Legend holds that renowned samurai Minamoto no Yoshimitsu passed down secret sho flute compositions to his master's son here before going to war, and the Ashigara Pass Flute Festival is held every September in connection with this legend. There are walkways that lead you around historical sites, such as castle and checkpoint ruins, and many tourists visit throughout all four seasons, including drivers visiting scenic tourist spots, and hikers to Mt. Fuji.
