Monjayaki first gained popularity at "Dagashi-ya" (traditional Japanese candy stores) as a fun snack for children to eat while playing. The origin of its unique name is said to come from "Moji-yaki" (literally "letter-writing-fry"), because children would use the watery flour batter to write characters on the iron griddle.
Tsukishima is an area built on reclaimed land at the mouth of the Sumida River in 1892. In the Taisho era (1912–1926), Monjayaki stalls began to line what is now Nishinaka-dori Street, creating a lively atmosphere. Today, the street is home to numerous Monjayaki specialty restaurants, attracting crowds who come to enjoy this simple, nostalgic flavor.
