Kushitamahime no mikoto-jinja Shrine| Kushitamahimeomikoto Jinja Shine

A shrine recorded in the Engishiki Book of Laws and Customs, the deity enshrined is Kushitamahime no Mikoto. The building is constructed on a site to the rear of a keyhole shape tumulus. There is clear evidence of a moat or trench surrounding the mound, and Haniwa fragments have been unearthed from the site.Prior to the Meiji Period (1868 -1912) the shrine was also referred to as Benzaiten. This is also the place name. There is a connection with, and earlier a dedication to, Tenkawa Benzaiten in Tenkawa Village in Yoshino-gun, which goes back to Kōan 7 (1284). Danjiri carts representing all the villages appear during the Totate Festival held in late autumn, on the 2nd and 3rd November, with magnificent ancient traditions and bravery on display.
