The town tree of Itano is the asebi (Pieris japonica, or “Temple Bells”), an evergreen shrub that produces cascading white or pink bell-shaped flowers in early spring. Asebi literally means “horse-intoxicating shrub.” Situated at about 400 meters altitude, Asebi Park runs along the ridge of Mt. Ryuo in the Asan Mountains. Its two observation decks offer superb views. Located around 10 minutes’ walk from the parking lot, the Osaka Pass Observation Deck at the park’s northern end looks west over the Seto Inland Sea. Shikoku no Michi, a 1,600-kilometer nature trail through all of Shikoku, passes through this point. South of the parking lot is a small rest area from which a trail leads to the Asebi Park Observation Deck. En route, the trail passes through an area where some 2,000 asebi shrubs grow. The high point is a view taking in part of Itano and the mountains to the east. This walk is about 10 minutes each way.
