This is a red weeping cherry tree of the Edohigan variety, and is a famous tree that was designated as a national natural monument on October 12, 1923. It is said to be one of Japan's three major cherry blossom trees, representing Japan, and is ranked among the Yokozuna of East and West, along with Gifu Prefecture's Usuzumizakura. It is said that the tree came to be called "Takizakura'' because the countless small pale pink flowers blooming on the branches that extend in all directions give the appearance of cascading waterfalls.
