This fireworks festival began as a way to pray for disaster recovery and to express gratitude for the blessings of the river, following the great flood of the Ibi River in 1894 (Meiji 27). Messages of encouragement and thanks from people, written on stickers, are attached to the fireworks shells and launched high into the sky in a grand display. The number of ”shakudama” (size 10 shells) launched is among the largest in the prefecture.
