明治元年の三池地方の大火事以来、火災除け祈願として行われている神事です。力自慢の若者達が、最重量70㎏もある木臼の中に水を入れ、その水をかぶって臼を放り投げる光景は、全国的にも珍しくかつ勇壮なものです。奇祭ゆえに大牟田市民はもとより、遠方より多くの観光客、カメラマンあるいは報道陣であふれ、毎年テレビで放映されるまでになっています。毎年成人の日に開催。
