Located in front of JR Shimamoto Station, this historic site is said to be the remains of a post station equipped with horses and other necessities for travelers. According to the Taiheiki, in the first year of Engen (1336), Masashige Kusunoki departed Kyoto for Hyogo to confront the large army of Takauji Ashikaga. At Sakurai post station, he left his last instructions to his legitimate son, Masatsura, and sent him back to Kawachi. This episode became widely known to later generations as the “Farewell at Sakurai” and has often been depicted in paintings, poetry, and song. The Sakurai Station Ruins were developed and maintained from the Meiji period through the early Showa era, with the erection of stone monuments and expansion of the grounds. In 1921 (Taisho 10), it was designated a National Historic Site. Open to the public, free to visit.
