Natural hot spring Chinoike Jigoku is the oldest of its kind in the entire country. It epitomizes our image of purgatory with its bloody-red pond boiling in high heat that even discharges reddish fumarolic gases as it evaporates. A popular souvenir item, "Chinoike Ointment," red clay produced from this spring of hell, is said to have medical benefits for eczema, burns, and other types of skin disorders. This item is only available for purchase here at the Blood Pond. Chinoike custard pudding modeled after the pond is also a popular specialty item here as well.
