More than 1400 years of history. Flood control dam of about 400,000 square meter.
Sayama Pond has a long history. A survey conducted in conjunction with the Heisei renovation revealed that it was built around 616, approximately 1,400 years ago. In other words, this pond is an artificial pond built to secure water for agriculture. It has a perimeter of 3.4 km and an area of about 400,000 square meters. This pond has taken on its present form as a result of the human knowledge and ingenuity of each era.
There is a record that Gyoki repaired the pond in 731. The pond was renovated by Chogen in the Kamakura period, and by Katagiri Katsumoto in the Edo period. In modern times, the Osaka Prefectural Government conducted major renovations from 1926 to 1931 and from 1988 to 2002.
On March 28, 2001, Osaka Prefectural Sayamaike Pond Museum was opened. The museum provides a friendly environment where visitors can learn more about the history of Sayama Pond.
