This place is also called Kumano Shrine because people heading to Kishu Kumano via Old Amano Highway made a pilgrimage here. In the old days, there was a "kami-buddha manifestation theory", a theory that gods and bodhisattvas were worshipped in the same place. Santo-jinjya Shrine has undergone a mysterious history due to this belief. According to tradition, the shrine was built in the 7th century and was once destroyed by a military fire, but was rebuilt in the 16th century by a monk named Taikan in the Konzo-ji Temple. Later, during the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji era, this shrine remained and Konzo-ji Temple disappeared.
