The layout of the Sumiyoshi-zukuri main shrine, worship hall, and other structures is simple and best balanced. It is said to be even older than Sayama Pond, which is recorded in the “Kojiki” as the oldest reservoir in Japan. The “Sayamatsutsumi Shrine,” dedicated to those who contributed to the development of Sayama Pond, was also enshrined here during the Meiji period, and together with Sayama-gami, it took on the form of a ubusuna-gami. In the calm precincts of the shrine, the Ebisu Festival on January 10 is celebrated with the sprinkling of 330 kg of mochi (rice cakes), which attracts a large number of people.
