The place where Yoshihiro Kan's art reached its maturity The shrine office of Otoko Shrine is located at the foot of Kunikami Mountain, a place associated with Ryokan. Kunikami, in the 13th year of Bunka (1816). In 1816, when Yoshihiro was 59 years old, he moved to this shrine office of Otoko Shrine due to the decrepit condition of his hermitage and the uphill climb in the mornings and evenings. It is said that the 10 years he spent here were the mature period of Yoshihiro's art, and that he read his poems about his later years in this place. A stone monument erected in 1858 on the shrine grounds bears an inscription that touches on his circumstances: “Lifelong Sloth Risshin 謄々任天真 ”*. It is believed to be the oldest existing poetry monument of Ryokan. The hermitage was also rebuilt in 1987 and remains so to this day.
