The oldest and most famous temple in Echigo
This is a temple of the Shingon sect located halfway up Mt.
In addition to the main hall, the temple grounds are lined with stately buildings such as Kyakuden (guest hall), Rokkakudo (hexagonal hall), Daishi-do (hall for priests), Zenjikyodo (hall for Buddhist sutras), Belfry-do (bell tower), and the Hall of Treasures.
Legend has it that Shuten Doji was a child of this temple.
In 2009, the temple celebrated the 1,300th anniversary of its founding.
