Experience the heart of Ryokan, a famous monk of the Edo period This is the hermitage where Yoshihiro spent about 20 years from the time he returned to Echigo in 1793 at the age of 40 after completing a rigorous ascetic training in various parts of Japan. Originally, it was built as a hermitage for Mangen Shonin, who rebuilt the main hall of Kunijoji Temple, and was one of the four tacho (pagodas)* of the priests of Kunijoji Temple, and was given five cups of rice every day. It was here that Ryōkan went out to beg for alms, practiced Zen meditation, and read “The Tale of Genji,” “Manyōshū,” and “Eiheiroku. It is said that he created many Chinese poems, long poems, and short poems. Tenjo Taifu,” which is synonymous with Yoshihiro's works, is said to have been written after the late Gogo-an period. A pagoda is a facility built to protect a mimeograph (graveyard) built in memory of the founder or high priest after his death, and is inhabited by priests and others who are guardians of the temple.
