Get in touch with the heart of Ryokan, a famous monk of the Edo period. This is the hermitage where Ryokan spent about 20 years from 1793, when he returned to Echigo at the age of 40 after completing a rigorous ascetic training in various places. Originally, it was built as a hermitage for Mangen Shonin, a guest monk who rebuilt the main hall of Kokujo-ji Temple, and was one of the four tacchu*(Temple founded inside) of the monks of Kokujo-ji Temple, who were given five cups of rice every day. Ryokan went out for almsgiving here, practiced Zen meditation, and read “The Tale of Genji”, ‘Manyoshu’, and “Eiheiroku”, among others. It is also believed that he produced many Chinese poems, long poems, and tanka poems. "Tenjo Taifu," which is synonymous with the works of Ryokan, is believed to have been written after the latter part of the Gogoan era. *Tacchu is a facility to protect the transcript (graveyard) built in memory of the founder or high priest after his death, and is inhabited by monks and others who are guardians of the temple.
