The best private school for Chinese studies in Japan Founded in 1833 by Buntai Suzuki in the village of Aozu, the private school was attended by more than 1,000 students for about 80 years until it was closed in 1912. At the age of 18, Bundae's talent was recognized by Ryokan, and he continued his friendship with Ryokan. It was inevitable that Ryokan's desire to help those suffering from the flooding of the Shinano River would live on in the teachings of Chozenkan. His teachings were passed on to Yasushi Hasegawa, who founded Saisei Gakusha, the predecessor of Nippon Medical School, and to Masanao Washio, Takenosuke Takahashi, Kan'ichi Otake, and others who worked hard for the construction of the Okawazu Diversion. The driving force behind their actions was their single-minded desire to save those who were suffering. The four exhibition rooms in the archives introduce the history of the Gakushu-juku, its educational features, textbooks, and the diverse achievements of those who studied the educational methods still applied today. Other exhibits include a model of the Yonetsu meteorite and works by the Japanese painter Misao Yokoyama.
